Neonatal Neurology Follow-Up Program
U.S. News Best Hospitals

The Neonatal Neurology Follow-Up Program at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital San Francisco specializes in the comprehensive, long-term care of children who are diagnosed with brain injury or neurological conditions as newborns. Our specialists are neonatal neurologists who care for patients in the Neuro-Intensive Care Nursery, or NICN. Founded in 2008, the NICN was the first program of its kind in the country, and continues to remain the leader in "brain-focused" neonatal care. Currently, UCSF is one of just a handful of hospitals nationwide that provide the highest level of care to this vulnerable population.

The clinic provides ongoing neurological care and long-term follow-up for patients with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy, stroke, seizures, intraventricular hemorrhage, arteriovenous malformations, genetic disorders, brain malformations, extreme prematurity and other related conditions. Our team includes a full-time nurse coordinator and a social worker. We work closely with our colleagues in the Intensive Care Nursery Follow-Up Program, rehabilitative medicine and neurosurgery, as well as community therapists, to facilitate additional services and ensure the best possible outcomes for our patients. We follow all high-risk graduates of the NICN and also accept referrals from the community.
