Fatty Liver & Weight Assessment Clinic
At the Pediatric Fatty Liver and Weight Assessment Clinic, our team cares for children and teens who have trouble maintaining a healthy weight. Our doctors and dietitians are experts in childhood obesity, as well as in the full range of pediatric conditions in which weight can be a key factor, such as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
Looking at both patients and their families, we evaluate behavior and biochemistry, paying close attention to the links between the two, especially as they apply to energy balance (calories burned compared to calories consumed). Our goal is to help patients manage their weight by learning healthy eating and exercise habits. We also consider drug and surgical therapies if appropriate.
Some of our locations offer specialized care for NAFLD. This condition, characterized by a buildup of fat deposits that can inflame and damage the liver, is the leading cause of chronic liver disease among children and teens in the United States, and obesity is a major risk factor. While not all overweight kids develop the condition, maintaining a healthy weight and adopting an active lifestyle are vital to liver health.
We know that lifestyle changes can be hard for both children and families, and our team is committed to providing the support and resources necessary to smooth the way.
