Accommodations

We support and encourage parents to stay with their child. All patient rooms are equipped with wireless high-speed Internet, locking storage cabinets and an extendable sleeper sofa.

If your child is in the hospital for more than a few days, our family resource coordinator will assist you with finding housing. Facilities such as Koret Family House, Ronald McDonald House or a local hotel or guesthouse are lodging options. Information on nearby hotels, motels and short-term apartment rentals is available on UCSF's campus Housing Office website.

We understand that not every parent can stay with their child in the hospital. If you need to return home, we will develop a communication plan with you so that you can receive regular updates on your child's care.

Family lounges are available on each floor. A refrigerator is available for your use. Please label all items in the refrigerator with your last name, first initial and the date and time it was stored.

Showers and laundry facilities are available for families throughout the hospital. If you need toiletries, please visit the Center for Families, located on the sixth floor.

Breast-feeding rooms are located throughout the hospital, and breast pumps are available for your convenience. Please ask your nurse or lactation consultant for any equipment, labels or instructions you might need. Refrigerators and freezers are available for storing breast milk.

Food Services

UCSF operates cafés and cafeterias at all our campuses, providing healthy and convenient dining options to our patients, visitors and staff. Our Mission Bay dining options are listed below.

Shorenstein Family Café

Offers an entrée station with daily specials and rotating food concepts, a pizza and pasta station, grab-and-go food, gourmet salads, sandwiches and soups, made-to-order deli and grill items, plus an assortment of healthy beverages and snacks.

Location: UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital, 1975 Fourth St., First Floor
Hours: Open daily, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m.

Bay Café Express

Offers grab-and-go salads, sandwiches and pastries, plus a full line of Peet's coffee, teas, espresso drinks and iced-blended coffees.

Location: Adjacent to the Shorenstein Family Café
Hours: Open daily, 6 a.m. – 10 p.m., and 6 a.m. – 8 p.m. on holidays

OPB Express

A coffee kiosk offering grab-and-go salads, sandwiches and pastries, plus Equator coffee and espresso drinks.

Location: Ron Conway Family Gateway Medical Building, 1825 Fourth St., First Floor Lobby
Hours: Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Vending Machines

Vending machines are located outside the Shorenstein Family Café, including our Smart Choice Pantry, which features freshly made sandwiches and salads. All machines are accessible 24 hours a day.

Visiting Guidelines

Dear UCSF Health Patients, Families and Visitors:

UCSF Health teams are working around the clock to stay on top of the evolving COVID-19 situation to ensure both excellent patient care as well as family and visitor safety.

Under the authority of City and County of San Francisco Health Officer No. C19-06, UCSF Health is restricting visitors from the following facilities:

Helen Diller Family Medical Center at Parnassus Heights
UCSF Medical Center at Mission Bay and Mount Zion
Langley Porter Psychiatric Hospital and Clinics
UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital San Francisco

Additional Visitor Information

  • Patients and their loved ones must designate a single individual who will be the point of contact for all information and conversations with the care team.
  • The designated point of contact will be responsible for sharing information with other family members or loved ones that should have this information.
  • The designated point of contact will hear from a member of the care team at least once a day for regular updates, or more frequently if there are significant changes in the condition of the patient or their care.
  • Some exceptions may apply as determined by the caregiving team.

We understand this is not going to be an easy or welcome transition. Please know this is to ensure everyone's safety during this COVID-19 pandemic and to comply with city-wide directives. If you have transportation or lodging challenges, please do not hesitate to ask your nurse for assistance. They will be able to connect you with the appropriate Social Work resources.

Gift Shop and Online Store

A gift shop is located on the first floor between the adult and children's hospitals. It offers a wide selection of gift items, including candy, fresh flowers and plants, magazines, books, toys, greeting cards and phone calling cards. The gift shop is open every day of the year, including holidays, and all proceeds support patient and family amenities. You also may purchase a gift over the phone, via email at [email protected] or by visiting our website at www.ucsfhealth.org/giftshop. The staff will arrange to have gifts delivered to hospital patients.
