The Integrated Pediatric Pain & Palliative Care (IP3) inpatient service is available to hospitalized children at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Our team includes pediatric hospitalists, board-certified pediatric anesthesiologists, board-certified pediatric palliative care physicians, a nurse practitioner, a licensed clinical psychologist and nurses.
The inpatient service is staffed by two teams. The acute/chronic pain team provides comprehensive acute and chronic pain management. The palliative care team provides an extra layer of support for children and families facing serious illness. We work collaboratively with providers from all medical specialties to help bridge the transition home.
We embrace innovative and integrative approaches to pain management. Some of our services include:
Palliative care is specialized medical care provided by an interdisciplinary team for children with serious illnesses. It focuses on wellness and comfort by providing children and their families with relief from the symptoms and stress of a serious illness. The goal is to improve quality of life for both the child and the family by providing an extra layer of support through partnership, collaboration and individualized care. Palliative care is appropriate at any age and at any stage in a serious illness, and can be provided together with curative or life-prolonging treatment.
