William Bernal

Pediatric rheumatologist

Dr. William Bernal is a pediatric rheumatologist, a specialist in caring for children with rheumatic conditions (disorders usually involving inflammation of joints or connective tissues). He is an expert in pediatric amplified pain syndrome and leads the UCSF Pediatric Amplified Pain Rehabilitation Program, an inpatient interdisciplinary approach to relieving pain and restoring function in children disabled by amplified pain.

Bernal's research focuses on patient-reported outcomes and digital health. Specifically, he examines how digital devices can be used to track and improve health.

Bernal earned a master of public health degree in tropical and communicable diseases at the University of South Florida College of Public Health. He earned his medical degree from the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University. He completed a residency in pediatrics at Children's Hospital Los Angeles, followed by a fellowship in pediatric rheumatology at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. He is a member of the American College of Rheumatology.
