Liver Vascular Anomalies & Portal Hypertension Clinic
The Pediatric Liver Vascular Anomalies and Portal Hypertension Clinic cares for infants, children and teens with a variety of conditions involving malformation or dysfunction of the liver's vascular system.
Our clinic's team includes pediatric liver specialists, imaging experts, interventional radiologists and surgeons who specialize in all vascular disorders of the liver, from the most common to the rarest and most complex.
The vascular system, also called the circulatory system, is made up of arteries, veins, capillaries and lymph vessels that move blood and lymph (fluid that contains lymphocytes and other white blood cells) through the body. Disorders affecting this system include hemangiomas (noncancerous growths formed from blood vessels) and arteriovenous malformations (abnormal tangles of blood vessels that disrupt blood flow and can rupture). Our clinic also specializes in conditions involving the portal vein, the blood vessel that brings blood to the liver from the digestive tract. When a blood clot – or thrombosis – blocks or narrows the portal vein, it can lead to a buildup in pressure (hypertension) and cause various complications.
Our team offers the full range of treatment options for these and other vascular conditions, including medications, surgery, endoscopy and interventional radiology, which uses imaging to facilitate precise, minimally invasive treatments that once required traditional surgery.
