Cognitive and Behavioral Neurology Clinic
U.S. News Best Hospitals

The Cognitive and Behavioral Neurology Program specializes in the assessment of children both on and off the autism spectrum, with disorders that affect their ability to perceive, process and integrate incoming information that provides the basis for attention, thinking and behavior. We investigate and treat the underlying causes of your child’s neurodevelopmental differences as well as any additional neurologic concerns, such as seizures and headaches. We provide medication management as well as behavioral and educational guidance and referrals as needed. We work collaboratively with providers at UCSF and in the community for comprehensive care and have a terrific team to help you with your visit and ongoing care.

Evaluations

At the Pediatric Cognitive and Behavioral Neurology Clinic, each patient undergoes a neurologic assessment, consisting of a neurodevelopmental interview and a physical examination. This initial assessment takes an hour.

We will schedule a 60-minute feedback session one to two weeks after your initial appointment, when we will answer your questions and discuss diagnosis, next steps for evaluation and a treatment plan. In some cases, a diagnosis will be deferred until more information — such as blood tests or brain imaging — is collected. A written report is sent to your child's primary care physician and/or referring physician on the day of your visit.

Please note that this clinic does not conduct assessments for the purpose of providing a clinical label. Instead, we focus on finding the underlying cause of the developmental differences and targeting treatments to each child's strengths and challenges. We are happy to provide excellent referrals for neuropsychology, autism diagnostics and psychiatric assessment and treatment as needed.

Before your first visit to the clinic, please complete our online new patient history form.
