Dr. Ted Ruel is a specialist in pediatric infectious diseases who cares for children living with HIV, from infancy through young adulthood. He provides consultation to pregnant people with HIV, around decisions around delivery and breastfeeding. He provides infectious disease consultations for children admitted to the hospital. He serves as chief of the UCSF Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases and Global Health.

In his research, Ruel aims to improve the care of all children living with HIV and to prevent new infections in infants. He co-founded Global Strategies, a nonprofit that aims to advance HIV care and maternal-child health around the world.

Ruel earned his medical degree at the Yale School of Medicine. He completed a residency in pediatrics and a fellowship in pediatric infectious diseases at UCSF.
