Pronouns: She | Her | Hers

Dr. Susan Gutierrez is a pediatric gastroenterologist who cares for children with a wide range of digestive conditions, including short bowel syndrome, feeding difficulties, growth concerns related to digestive problems, and chronic gastrointestinal symptoms. She has expertise in managing children who require parenteral nutrition (nutrients delivered directly to the bloodstream). She takes a family-centered approach in her practice, partnering closely with caregivers to develop individualized treatment plans that support each child's nutrition, growth and overall well-being.

In her research, Gutierrez studies the various ways different hospitals treat intestinal failure (when the gut can't absorb the nutrients and fluids the body needs). Her goal is to identify effective, proven strategies to support children in reducing or ending use of parenteral nutrition. She is also committed to including the voices of caregivers in research, seeking to ensure that treatment innovations are responsive to the needs of families.

Gutierrez earned her medical degree from the University of Virginia. She completed a residency in pediatrics at the University of Miami, training at Jackson Memorial Hospital and serving a year as chief resident. She completed a fellowship in pediatric gastroenterology at UCSF.
