Pediatric immunologist
Immunologist, researcher, teacher and still a student
Dr. Jennifer Puck is a pediatric immunologist, a doctor who specializes in immune function disorders in children. She developed a test to screen newborns for severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID), which results in an impaired immune system and is fatal without treatment. The SCID test is now part of the standard newborn screening panel in several states, including California.
In addition to caring for pediatric patients in immunology, Puck is a researcher at the UCSF Clinical and Translational Science Institute. She studies primary immunodeficiencies, and her work includes the identifying and mapping of genes linked to these diseases.
Puck earned her medical degree at Harvard Medical School. She completed a residency in pediatrics at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, followed by fellowships in infectious disease and immunology at Baylor College of Medicine.
