Fetal surgery firsts
The first open fetal surgery in the world was performed at UCSF in the early 1980s.

Dr. Valerie J. Flaherman is a pediatrician with special interests in breastfeeding and preventive care for newborns.
Flaherman's research investigates issues related to breastfeeding.
Flaherman earned her medical degree from Harvard Medical School and her master of public health degree from the University of California, Berkeley. She completed a residency in pediatrics at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland and a residency in preventive medicine at UCSF.
