Pediatric immunologist

Dr. Diane Wara is a pediatric immunologist, a specialist in caring for children with immune system abnormalities. She has a primary interest in HIV/AIDS and has published extensively on the subject. She is program director of the UCSF Pediatric Clinical Research Center, which focuses on translating relevant study findings into patient care for children and receives funding from the National Institutes of Health.

Wara earned her medical degree from the University of California, Irvine. She completed a residency in allergy and immunology at Harbor General Hospital and a fellowship in rheumatology at UCSF. In 1991, she became the first associate dean for women at a U.S. medical school. At UCSF, she is the associate dean for minority and women's affairs. She has received numerous honors, including the Eleanor Roosevelt International Cancer Fellowship from the American Cancer Society and election to the Institute of Medicine, part of the National Academy of Sciences.
