The first open fetal surgery in the world was performed at UCSF in the early 1980s.

Pediatric neurologist and movement disorders specialist
Dr. Ana Grijalvo Perez is a pediatric neurologist who cares for children with movement and other neurological disorders. Her areas of special interest include pediatric movement disorders, such as Tourette syndrome, dystonia, myoclonus, spasticity, paroxysmal movement disorders, tremors and chorea. She is also interested in pediatric epilepsy, neurodevelopmental disorders, autism spectrum disorder and migraines.
Grijalvo Perez received her medical degree from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid School of Medicine and completed a residency in pediatrics at Rady Children's Hospital – San Diego. She completed a fellowship in child neurology at the University of California, San Diego. She speaks Spanish, Italian and German.
