Previously, as a nurse, she cared for pediatric patients with blood cancers, including those undergoing blood or bone marrow transplantation. She has worked as a nurse practitioner in pediatric oncology since 2007.

Hollinger earned her master's degree in nursing in the clinical nurse specialist program at San Francisco State University, where she also completed the work to achieve her family nurse practitioner certification.
