Neuro-Gastrointestinal Clinic
U.S. News Best Hospitals

The Neuro-Gastrointestinal Clinic allows patients to be seen by experts from the divisions of Child Neurology and Pediatric Gastroenterology on the same day at our Greenbrae office in Marin. We specialize in assessing children on and off the autism spectrum with additional gastrointestinal challenges such as diarrhea, constipation and cyclic vomiting. We investigate the underlying cause of your child’s neurodevelopmental and gastrointestinal differences, providing guidance on behavioral, educational and medical treatments.

At the UCSF Neuro-Gastrointestinal Clinic, each patient undergoes a separate neurologic and gastrointestinal assessment, each of which takes an hour. We will schedule a 60-minute feedback session one to two weeks after your initial appointment, when we will answer your questions and discuss diagnosis, next steps for evaluation and a treatment plan. In some cases, a diagnosis will be deferred until more information — such as blood tests or brain imaging — is collected. A written report is sent to your child's primary care physician and/or referring physician on the day of your visit.

Please note that this clinic does not conduct assessments for the purpose of providing a clinical label. Instead, we focus on finding the underlying cause of the developmental challenge and targeting treatments to each child's strengths and challenges. We are happy to provide excellent referrals for neuropsychology, autism diagnostics and psychiatric assessment and treatment as needed.
