Dr. Sarah Coates is a dermatologist who cares for children with all types of skin conditions. She also works at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center, caring for adults living with HIV. Her special interests include infectious diseases, social determinants of health and Kaposi's sarcoma (a cancerous condition of immunosuppressed people).

In her research, Coates studies ways to optimize diagnosis of Kaposi's sarcoma, which predominantly affects people who are HIV positive. She has extensive experience in global health dermatology and has spent time working in East Africa since 2011. She received a Fogarty fellowship from the National Institutes of Health to study Kaposi's sarcoma at the Infectious Diseases Institute in Kampala, Uganda.

Coates earned her medical degree at the Weill Cornell Graduate School of Medical Sciences. She completed a residency in dermatology and a fellowship in pediatric dermatology at UCSF.
