Fetal surgery firsts
The first open fetal surgery in the world was performed at UCSF in the early 1980s.
Monica Volz is a nurse practitioner who specializes in caring for patients with movement disorders. She educates and prepares patients who are undergoing deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery, in which surgeons implant a device that sends electric signals to regulate brain activity. She helps facilitate every stage of their care.
Volz serves as the research nurse coordinator for a multicenter long-term study of DBS and patients with Parkinson's disease.
Volz earned her master's degree in nursing at San Francisco State University.
