The first open fetal surgery in the world was performed at UCSF in the early 1980s.

Miria M. Toveg is a practitioner of traditional Chinese medicine who specializes in acupuncture treatments and counseling in the use of herbs and vitamins. She has expertise in conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder and back injury, as well as dietary therapies, integrative health, pain management and stress reduction. She also has expertise in women's health, including fertility, pregnancy and the birthing process, menopause and women's cancer care. She provides supportive complementary therapies for patients going through cancer treatment.
Taking a whole-body approach, Toveg focuses on educating patients in self-care and empowering them with resources that help them make the best informed decisions for themselves.
Toveg earned her master's degree at the San Francisco College of Acupuncture. She has been practicing traditional Chinese medicine since 1993.
In her free time, Toveg enjoys walking, yoga and dance.
