Maureen McGrath is a pediatric nurse practitioner with over 35 years of experience caring for children and teens with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. She was instrumental in starting the first pumps for pediatric diabetes patients in 1996. Subsequently, she has started and managed over 500 children, from toddlers to teens, on insulin pumps. McGrath also has been involved in diabetes camps for more than 30 years, most recently serving as a medical committee member establishing medical protocols for all aspects of diabetes management within the camp setting. She has a special interest in working with Spanish-speaking populations using a shared medical appointment (SMA) model.
McGrath earned a bachelor's degree in psychology at the University of California, Berkeley and a master's in nursing at UCSF. She was the first nurse to be offered the Dorothy Frank Diabetes Fellowship at UCSF, which she completed in 1996 under the direction of Dr. John Karam. McGrath is also board certified in advanced diabetes management. She has been honored twice by the Diabetic Youth Foundation for service to children and families with diabetes.
McGrath is passionate about medical education, and serves as the director of the Madison Clinic Peggy Huang Diabetes Nurse Fellows Program. One of the highlights of her career has been training over 90 future nurse practitioners in a diabetes elective through the UCSF School of Nursing. She also organizes the Campamento Familiar, a weekend camp for Spanish-speaking families with children with diabetes. Her favorite place to teach is in the camp setting, where future healthcare professionals can see youth with diabetes thriving, climbing mountains and learning skills to help them lead their best lives.
