Martina A. Steurer

Dr. Martina A. Steurer is a pediatric cardiac critical care specialist and neonatologist who provides pre- and postsurgical care for babies and children with congenital heart disorders and other heart conditions. She has particular expertise in caring for preterm and underweight newborns with heart problems. She also works with other cardiac and neonatal centers across the country to develop guidelines and best-care practices that will give these vulnerable patients the best possible start to their lives.

Steurer's research focuses on premature infants born with heart disease and how the pre-birth or birth environment influences their development. With a particular interest in health disparities and socioeconomic factors, she hopes to identify treatment targets for improving the health of these patients.

Steurer earned her medical degree from the University of Zurich Faculty of Medicine. Also in Switzerland, she completed a residency in pediatrics and a fellowship in neonatology at the Children's Hospital of Lucerne. At UCSF, she completed a fellowship in pediatric critical care medicine and earned a master of advanced study degree in clinical research.

Steurer loves graphic design, and her medical illustrations have been used in books and journals as well as on websites. She lived in Ecuador for a year as a teenager and enjoys practicing her Spanish.
