Dr. Martin Thelin is a pediatric endocrinologist who cares for children and adolescents with cholesterol and triglyceride disorders. He leads the Pediatric Lipid Clinic at UCSF, providing comprehensive evaluation and management of lipid disorders (abnormal fat and cholesterol levels in the blood) in young patients. His goal is to prevent early-onset cardiovascular disease by diagnosing lipid abnormalities early and tailoring therapies — including lifestyle coaching, family-centered education and new medications — to each child's needs.
In research, Thelin is interested in how inflammation, autoimmunity and metabolic dysfunction in childhood are linked to faulty lipid metabolism (the formation and breakdown of lipids), with a particular focus on the connection between lipid disorders and immune dysregulation. Working closely with families, clinical teams and laboratory scientists, he aims to advance innovative therapies for children with high-risk or genetic lipid abnormalities.
Thelin earned his medical degree and doctorate in biochemistry from Lund University in Sweden. He completed a residency in pediatrics and a fellowship in pediatric endocrinology at UCSF. He also completed postdoctoral training in immunology and type 1 diabetes at the Joslin Diabetes Center, an affiliate of Harvard Medical School.
