Physician-scientist tackling type 1 diabetes with technology

Dr. Laya Ekhlaspour is a pediatric endocrinologist who cares for children with conditions related to the body's hormones, including type 1 and type 2 diabetes. She has a special interest in using technology to help control blood sugar levels and make living with diabetes easier.

Ekhlaspour's research focuses on developing and testing new ways to manage diabetes, including continuous glucose monitors and automated insulin delivery systems, and on new insulin therapies. She received a grant from the National Institutes of Health to study how automating insulin administration could improve blood sugar control after meals.

Originally from Iran, Ekhlaspour earned her medical degree at Kerman University of Medical Sciences in Iran. She completed a residency in pediatrics at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, followed by a fellowship in pediatric endocrinology at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital.

Ekhlaspour is a member of the American Diabetes Association, Endocrine Society, Pediatric Endocrine Society and International Society of Pediatrics and Adolescents with Diabetes.
