Fetal surgery firsts
The first open fetal surgery in the world was performed at UCSF in the early 1980s.

Massage therapist
Kate Phelan is a massage therapist who cares for children experiencing pain, applying techniques that relieve symptoms and promote healing. With three decades of experience, she is trained in Swedish massage, craniosacral therapy and manual lymphatic drainage (a technique for reducing fluid buildup in tissues). She established the first pediatric massage service at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland.
In addition to caring for patients, Phelan teaches massage to nurses who work with infants. She is dedicated to championing massage as a safe and effective complementary therapy.
Before joining UCSF, Phelan provided massage care in clinic and hospital settings to patients at Sutter Health, California Pacific Medical Center (CPMC), Alta Bates and Summit Healthcare.
