Dr. Fernando Gonzalez is a neonatologist who specializes in caring for newborns with brain injuries and infants requiring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (oxygen support from an artificial lung), including premature infants.

Gonzalez's research focuses on brain injury in newborns, stroke in newborns, hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (brain damage from insufficient blood flow or oxygen), neurogenesis (the process by which the brain's nerves cells form) and stem cell plasticity (the ability of stem cells to switch to a different type).

Gonzalez earned his medical degree at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. He completed a residency in pediatrics at Harbor – UCLA Medical Center and a fellowship in neonatology at UCSF.
