Gastroenterologist
Liver specialist
Division Chief, Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, San Francisco

Dr. Sue Rhee is a pediatric gastroenterologist and liver specialist who specializes in intestinal failure, liver disease and transplantation of the intestines and liver.

Rhee is the division chief of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition for the UCSF Department of Pediatrics. At UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital, she is medical director of both the Pediatric Liver Transplant Program and Pediatric Intestinal Rehabilitation and Transplantation Program. She also co-directs the Pediatric Pancreas Program.

Rhee's research investigates pediatric intestinal failure, liver transplantation and total parenteral nutrition (TPN), an intravenous feeding method used when the digestive tract isn't working properly. Her TPN research has a particular focus on preventing liver disease associated with chronic use of TPN.

Rhee earned her medical degree at Albany Medical College. She then completed a residency in pediatrics at the University of Maryland Medical Center, followed by a fellowship in pediatric gastroenterology and nutrition at Harvard Medical School. While at Harvard, she conducted research on age-specific differences in intestinal immune response at the cellular and molecular level.
