Sandrijn van Schaik

Dr. Sandrijn van Schaik is a specialist in critical care for children.

Van Schaik earned her medical degree at the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands. She spent several years studying respiratory syncytial virus infection – a common cold that can be serious in infants – at John R. Oishei Children's Hospital in Buffalo, New York, and the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands, where she earned her doctorate in infectious diseases. She completed a pediatric residency at Floating Hospital for Children at Tufts Medical Center and completed a fellowship in pediatric critical care medicine in the joint fellowship program of UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals San Francisco and Oakland.

Van Schaik has won several awards, including UCSF's Charlotte Rose Coleman – Fry Award for pediatric critical care fellows, the UCSF Exceptional Physician Award and the UCSF Department of Pediatrics' award for teaching excellence. She is the principal investigator on a number of research projects focused on improving education for health professionals.

In addition, van Schaik serves as education director of the Kanbar Center for Simulation and Clinical Skills, which provides simulation training for all of UCSF's health profession schools. Her involvement in educational activities includes a simulation-based training program for pediatric medicine professionals. She also directs the Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Program at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals San Francisco and Oakland.
