James Naprawa

Environmentalist, bird-watcher and mediocre guitar player

Dr. James Naprawa is a specialist in pediatric emergency medicine who cares for sick and injured children of all ages at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland. His interests include pediatric asthma, pediatric community-acquired pneumonia, medical education and quality improvement in pediatric emergency medicine.

Naprawa earned his medical degree at State University of New York Downstate Health Sciences University, where he also completed a residency in pediatrics. He completed a fellowship in pediatric emergency medicine at Nationwide Children's Hospital, an affiliate of the Ohio State University College of Medicine.

Naprawa has earned numerous awards for his teaching and patient care, including being named Physician of the Year at Nationwide Children's Hospital in 2011. He serves on the editorial board of the journal Pediatric Emergency Medicine Practice.

Away from work, Naprawa enjoys spending time in nature, bird-watching and playing the guitar.

    The first open fetal surgery in the world was performed at UCSF in the early 1980s.
