Pediatric critical care specialist

Dr. Cristina Alvira is a critical care specialist who treats children with a variety of serious illnesses.

With funding from the National Institutes of Health, Alvira's research has made significant contributions to understanding pulmonary vascular development (how the lungs' blood vessels mature), looking especially at injury in the lungs of newborns. She has led investigations into molecular mechanisms that regulate blood vessel growth, regeneration and repair in babies' lungs, with a focus on translational research (applying laboratory findings to creating new or better medical therapies). She is committed to improving outcomes for critically ill infants and children.

At Stanford University, Alvira earned her medical degree and completed a residency in pediatrics as well as a fellowship in pediatric critical care medicine.
