Fetal surgery firsts
The first open fetal surgery in the world was performed at UCSF in the early 1980s.
Neonatologist
Dr. Benjamin Rodrigues is a neonatologist who provides intensive care for newborns. He specializes in treating premature and critically ill infants, including resuscitation during high-risk deliveries.
Rodrigues' research focuses on learning the mechanisms of brain injuries in babies who are seriously unwell or born too early – conditions that make them particularly vulnerable to brain damage that can persist for life. His goal is to develop treatments and protective strategies for these children.
Rodrigues earned his medical degree at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. He completed a residency in pediatrics at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. At UCSF, he completed a fellowship in neonatal and perinatal medicine, as well as a fellowship in the pediatric scientist development program.
