Ashkon Shaahinfar

Dr. Ashkon Shaahinfar is an emergency medicine physician who cares for ill and injured infants, children, teens and young adults in the emergency department. He is the director of emergency point-of-care ultrasound (the bedside use of ultrasound to help diagnose and treat children receiving emergency care) at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland. In addition to point-of-care ultrasound, he has special interests in firearm injuries, youth violence prevention, child advocacy and medical education.

One factor that drew Shaahinfar to pediatric emergency medicine was the opportunity to study and address socioeconomic and systemic factors affecting children's health and issues that lead children to the emergency department. His research has focused on examining long-term outcomes among children and adolescents who survive gun violence in the Bay Area.

Shaahinfar earned his medical degree from UCSF. At the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, he earned a master of public health degree with a focus on health, human rights and health promotion. He completed a residency in pediatrics at MassGeneral Hospital for Children, a fellowship in pediatric emergency medicine at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland and a fellowship in emergency ultrasound at Highland Hospital, part of the Alameda Health System. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
