Fetal surgery firsts
The first open fetal surgery in the world was performed at UCSF in the early 1980s.

Andrea E. Pedersen is a nurse practitioner at UCSF who cares for young adults, adolescents and children with a variety of endocrine disorders, including early or delayed puberty, growth disorders, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and thyroid disease. She specializes in providing research-founded health care for transgender, nonbinary and gender-diverse children and adolescents.
Pedersen earned her master's degree in nursing at the UCSF School of Nursing. She completed her training as a pediatric nurse practitioner in UCSF's advanced practice program, and in 2012, she joined UCSF's pediatric endocrinology team.
