James Huang, MD

Co-director, Hemophilia Treatment Center
Director, Pediatric Hematology
Pediatric hematologist-oncologist

Dr. James Huang serves as director of pediatric hematology and co-director of the UCSF Hemophilia Treatment Center. He is an expert in caring for children with blood disorders, including hemophilia, thrombophilia and hemoglobinopathies (blood diseases that affect red blood cells, such as thalassemia and sickle cell disease), as well as in addressing issues related to bone marrow failure.

Huang's research focuses on bleeding disorders, hemoglobinopathies and stem cell transplantation to treat blood disorders. He has a particular interest in Shwachman-Diamond syndrome, an inherited bone marrow failure syndrome associated with pancreatic dysfunction that also predisposes children to leukemia.

A graduate of Harvard College, Huang earned his medical degree at Baylor College of Medicine. He completed a residency in pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins Hospital and a pediatric hematology and oncology fellowship at Boston Children's Hospital and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, affiliates of Harvard Medical School. Prior to joining UCSF in 2006, he was a faculty member at Baylor College of Medicine and worked at Texas Children's Cancer and Hematology Centers, where he was instrumental in starting its nationally designated hemophilia treatment center.
