Adolescent Health Clinic

The UCSF Teen Health Clinics and UCSF Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine Clinic offer comprehensive care for patients ages 11 to 26. With training and expertise in all aspects of adolescent health – physical, emotional, psychological and sexual – our team of experts provides the best possible care.

The teams at these clinics include doctors, nurses, social workers, dietitians and other specialists trained to handle the complex needs of today's adolescents. We value our patients as individuals and consider every aspect of their lives as part of addressing their unique physical and mental wellness issues. As they move into adulthood, we provide gender-affirming care and care that recognizes the impact of past trauma.

We also care for special populations, such as runaways and teens placed outside the home. In addition, for needs related to gender identity, our specialists provide services in the UCSF Child and Adolescent Gender Center.

All our clinics offer these services:

  • General primary care
  • Vaccinations
  • Gynecologic care, such as Pap tests and contraception
  • Prevention, identification and treatment of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PREP)
  • Menstrual management for such conditions as heavy menstrual bleeding or irregular periods
  • Care for complex medical conditions and psychosocial issues, including abdominal pain, chronic fatigue and other concerns affecting daily life
  • Counseling for behavioral concerns, such as anxiety, depression, school challenges, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and sleep issues

At our Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine Clinic, we also provide support for dealing with:

  • Eating disorders, including medical assessment, management, nutrition evaluation and counseling for patients with eating, nutrition and weight concerns
  • Substance use, including diagnosis of issues and recommendations for treatment, such as medication therapy for addiction

For many of the services we provide, patients who are 12 to 17 years old have the legal right to confidentiality when they consent to their own treatment. California laws protecting teen confidentiality were written to encourage young people to get the health care they need.

Confidential services include the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases; substance use counseling; and mental health care. We encourage teens to talk with their parents about their needs and concerns, but generally these decisions are their own unless a health issue poses a serious danger.
