Stroke & Cerebrovascular Center

The UCSF Pediatric Stroke and Cerebrovascular Disease Center is the only center in the country offering comprehensive care by the world's leading experts in pediatric stroke and cerebrovascular disease. Cerebrovascular disease includes a large group of conditions in which the arteries in the brain, or those connected to the brain, are defective. These conditions are rare in children and generally not considered childhood ailments. But surprisingly, about 4,000 children in the United States have a stroke every year. Their treatment often requires the expertise of several specialists as well as advanced diagnostic and treatment approaches. Our team is capable of treating the most challenging and complex conditions.

UCSF — ranked the best hospital in the West in neurology and neurosurgery by U.S. News & World Report — offers a team approach, bringing together experts in neurology, neurosurgery, hematology and diagnostic and interventional neuroradiology. The team includes a pediatric neurologist who is one of the few experts in the country with special training in childhood stroke and cerebrovascular disease. Complex cases are presented to the pediatric neurovascular team to recommend each patient's treatment plan.

We offer the following comprehensive services:

  • Comprehensive Evaluations — A pediatric neurologist, one of the few in the country with special training in pediatric cerebrovascular disease and stroke, provides new patients with an initial evaluation and coordinates diagnostic work-ups. Pediatric blood disorder specialists with expertise in thrombosis — or clotting that obstructs the flow of blood — evaluate children suspected of having an increased tendency to clot.

  • Advanced Diagnostic Tests — We offer the most advanced tests to diagnose conditions, including advanced neuro-imagining tests, with particular expertise in pediatric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and angiography in children. Pediatric anesthesiologists perform the sedation needed for pediatric imagining tests, enhancing the safety of the procedure.

  • Latest Treatments — Pediatric and vascular neurosurgeons offer state-of-the-art techniques, many not available at other medical centers, for the treatment of cerebrovascular disease, such as microsurgery and Gamma Knife radiosurgery. UCSF interventional neuroradiology experts pioneered the endovascular treatment of pediatric vascular malformations, such as Vein of Galen malformations. We also offer endovascular treatment for a variety of pediatric cerebrovascular diseases.
