Rebecca Gates is a social worker with special interests in caring for children with complex health conditions and for those who have experienced family violence. She manages pediatric social services. Prior to assuming this position, she was the department's chief clinical social worker; she used her background in crisis intervention to provide emotional support, advocacy, resource guidance and psychosocial education to children and adolescents as well as their families in primary care and inpatient settings.

After earning a master's degree in social work at the University of Washington, Gates completed additional training at the Child Trauma Training Institute through Jewish Family and Children's Services of San Francisco.

Gates is a member of the National Association of Social Workers, Society for Social Work Leadership in Health Care and Bay Area Social Workers in Health Care. She received the 2007 UCSF Chancellor Award for Exceptional University Service. She serves on the UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Family Advisory Council.
