Melissa Liebowitz

Lean Champion, KonMari enthusiast, sci-fi lover

Dr. Melissa Liebowitz is a neonatologist who cares for premature babies and babies with conditions that require medical or surgical treatment during their first month of life. She also cares for babies in the intensive care follow-up clinic, where she assesses developmental progress and recommends therapies for developmental challenges.

As quality director for the neonatology division, Liebowitz has a special interest in improving care and safety for patients. She focuses on developing systems that facilitate delivering the highest-quality and safest care to patients, and the best experience for their families. She has led multidisciplinary initiatives to decrease complications of prematurity and improve growth in her tiniest patients, and to prevent accidental dislodgement of breathing tubes in her sickest patients. As a UCSF Health Lean Champion, she strives to foster a culture that supports and encourages improvement, respect and collaboration.

Liebowitz earned her medical degree from the Florida State University College of Medicine. At UCSF, she completed a residency in pediatrics, followed by a fellowship in neonatal-perinatal medicine.
