UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital: A Historic Turning Point

Sam Hawgood, M.B. B.S.

University of California, San Francisco has been providing care for children and their families throughout Northern California since the first pediatric unit was organized in 1913. Today, as a "hospital in a hospital," UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital is the home of internationally renowned programs in pediatric medicine, pediatric surgery, pediatric anesthesia and pediatric radiology. Our patients and their families are provided innovative child life services, school programs and other support services to create a family-centered haven for children within the larger UCSF Medical Center.

In September, the Regents of the University of California marked a historic turning point in the story of UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital by approving funds to design a world-class children's hospital on a 14-acre site immediately adjacent to UCSF's new Mission Bay campus.

Diana Farmer, M.D.

To be located at the corner of 16th and 3rd streets, just minutes from downtown San Francisco, and with superb regional access, the new UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital at Mission Bay will link groundbreaking scientific discovery with treatments and cures for children's diseases in an innovative and healing environment for patients and their families.

The children's hospital will be closely integrated with a new UCSF women's hospital to preserve the seamless delivery of care for mothers and newborns, while providing facilities that are designed for the special needs of our patients and community physician partners. A UCSF cancer hospital will also be constructed at Mission Bay as part of the first phase of hospital development, creating an integrated clinical complex on the most exciting new biomedical campus in the country.

We have already initiated the search for a world-class architect for this ambitious project, and we look forward to working closely with you, our community partners, in designing a visionary facility for our patients, their families and their community physicians.
