UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Reaches Out to Physicians

Physicians at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital are dedicated to not only providing the highest level of care for patients, but also to reaching out to physicians in the community and throughout the region. UCSF's perinatal and neonatal programs have long been at the forefront of outreach to surrounding communities, and have established ongoing relationships with 17 hospitals in Northern California.

Fetal Web Portal

The UCSF Fetal Treatment Center has long fielded patient and physician inquiries from afar. Most inquiries have come by phone or by mail, which can make the process slower and less efficient than it would be if the patient were in San Francisco. Now, however, UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital is setting up a new web portal, called "Inside," that will allow patients more rapid and individualized access to services provided by physicians at the Fetal Treatment Center.

Clinic Addresses Many Facets of Congenital Anomalies

Through dramatic advances in fetal and neonatal surgery, many babies that years ago would have died shortly after birth can be saved. Often these babies, however, require years of follow-up care from many specialists and subspecialists. Making sure that these children get the proper care can be a daunting task for both physicians and parents. To ensure that children can get complete care — and to make the process less difficult for their parents — physicians, nurses and therapists at UCSF are creating the Congenital Anomalies Clinic.

Call Center Improves Communication With Parents

Three years ago, UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital began organizing a centralized call center that could efficiently and quickly put parents of UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital patients in touch with whomever they needed to talk to. The best thing about the new system is that parents don't notice a thing.

Access Center: Expediting Transport

In the past two years, UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital physicians, nurses and administrators have worked together to create the Access Center, making the process of referring and transporting pediatric and obstetric patients far faster and more efficient. The Access Center has led to a 20 percent increase in the number of patients transported and an increase in satisfaction among referring physicians.
