Ferriero Named Physician in Chief

FerrieroDonna M. Ferriero, M.D., an internationally recognized pediatric neurologist, has been named chair of the Department of Pediatrics and physician in chief of UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital, effective May 1.

A 23-year member of the UCSF faculty and 1979 graduate of the UCSF School of Medicine, Ferriero has served as interim chair of the Department of Pediatrics since July 2010. She served as chief of Child Neurology at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital for 13 years, where she directed a team of doctors with expertise in epilepsy, neuromuscular disease, developmental disabilities and neurological cancer.

She is president-elect of the Association of University Professors of Neurology and president of the Child Neurology Society and a member of the National Neurological Disorders and Stroke Advisory Council. She was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences in 2005, and to the Association of American Physicians in 2011.

Sam Hawgood, M.B.B.S., dean of the UCSF School of Medicine and vice chancellor for medical affairs, said, "I know that Dr. Ferriero's experience and vision will ably guide the department towards its exciting future home in UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital at Mission Bay."
