Perspective – Clinical Integration

As longtime providers of comprehensive subspecialty care, those of us at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital believe the renewed emphasis on clinical integration over the last few years is an important development for our patients. We are dedicated to delivering the highest standards of patient care and communication to the families we serve and the physicians with whom we collaborate.

Thus, our lead story in this issue covers the way interdisciplinary teams at our Pediatric Heart Center integrate care across specialties, weave treatment advances into their care decisions, and coordinate with referring physicians to minimize long-term complications for everything from heart transplant to pulmonary hypertension. A companion case study tells the story of a 14-year-old patient with a congenital heart condition whose pulmonary valve replacement was failing. His community physicians guided him to our heart center so he could take advantage of a less invasive implant option than the open procedures he’d had over a decade earlier.

In our third story, our new director of strategic development and outreach discusses the ways in which we’re expanding our specialty outreach clinics to communities throughout Central and Northern California.

Our final story highlights how we use technology to help community physicians like you work more closely with us in the ways in which you feel most comfortable.

In addition, the opening of our full-service Pediatric Emergency Department, scheduled for April, strengthens our commitment to our surrounding communities by enhancing our already top-of-the-line care for pediatric emergencies.

Improving clinical integration in today’s complex and rapidly changing health care system is one of our priorities. With your help, we can establish a new standard of collaborative excellence between UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital and our community partners for the benefit of Bay Area children.
