Two dermatologists at UCSF Medical Center -- Dr. Ilona Frieden and Dr. Patricia Engasser -- received top honors from the Women's Dermatologic Society at its annual meeting.

Dr. Ilona Frieden, chief of pediatric dermatology at UCSF Children's Hospital and a clinical professor, was awarded the 2005 Mentor of the Year Award. Since 1996, Frieden has mentored 17 members of the society, demonstrating her expertise in patient care and research in children's skin diseases, vascular anomalies and port-wine stains, a type of birth mark.

Dr. Patricia Engasser, a long-time volunteer clinical professor at UCSF, was awarded the 2005 Rose Hirschler Award. The award is named in honor of Dr. Rose Hirschler, the first known female dermatologist in the United States. Engasser was chosen for her contributions to medicine and dermatology and for enhancing the role of women in dermatology through her work in cosmetic allergens and contact dermatitis.

The awards were presented on Feb. 20 in New Orleans.
