Michael J. Cooper, MD

Pediatric cardiologist

Dr. Michael J. Cooper is a pediatric cardiologist who cares for children with congenital and acquired heart conditions.

Cooper’s research focuses on the development and use of echocardiography (imaging the heart with ultrasound) to diagnose pediatric heart defects noninvasively.

A native of Berkeley, California, Cooper studied at Hebrew University in Jerusalem after high school and earned his medical degree from Tel Aviv University Sackler School of Medicine. Upon returning to the United States, he completed a pediatric residency at Kaiser Permanente Oakland Medical Center, where he served as chief resident. He completed a fellowship in pediatric cardiology at UCSF.

Cooper enjoyed a 30-year career with Kaiser Permanente Northern California, serving as director of pediatric cardiology at three Kaiser hospitals. During this time, he maintained an active relationship with UCSF as a professor of pediatrics in the cardiology department. He has also been active globally in treating children with heart defects, serving parts of the world that lack access to care.
