J. Jessie Rose Cohen, LCSW, MSW

Social worker

J. Jessie Rose Cohen is a transgender, nonbinary-identified social worker who provides support, resources and advocacy for gender-nonconforming and transgender youths, as well as their families. Cohen offers a gender-affirming approach based on family systems theory, which understands people in the context of their family units. While establishing emotional and physical safety for patients, Cohen’s practice incorporates trauma-informed care, an approach that recognizes events or situations causing extreme stress and addresses their impact on the individual. She also trains other clinicians in these models of care.

Cohen serves as director of community-based clinical services and training for a collaborative project between the UCSF Child and Adolescent Gender Center and the San Francisco Department of Public Health. In this role, she works throughout the city and county of San Francisco to provide training and consultations to nonprofit agencies and schools. Cohen also offers assessments and gender care, and support in family and group settings.

Cohen earned a bachelor's degree in deafness rehabilitation counseling (a methodology for helping people with hearing loss achieve their life goals) at Northern Illinois University. Cohen completed a master's degree in social work at the University of Chicago School of Social Service Administration.

Cohen is a trainer and consultant for the child welfare system and organizations around the country that aim to improve their ability to serve gender-expansive children and adolescents. In addition, Cohen has a private practice in the Bay Area, offering psychotherapy, consultation and supervision to therapists and organizations and gender care. Cohen was a contributing writer to the American Psychological Association’s Affirmative Counseling and Psychological Practice With Transgender and Gender Nonconforming Clients, a guidebook for mental health practitioners, and is writing a social work textbook focused on access to mental health care for transgender youth.

Over a 20-year career, Cohen has served on surgery review boards, designed multispecialty clinics and worked with hundreds of families in gender-affirming care. She is extremely proud to be part of the UCSF Child and Adolescent Gender Center.
