Saving future lives
Janelle Facchino is a nurse practitioner who specializes in caring for children receiving stem cell transplants, both during hospitalization and after discharge. She also assists with gene therapy trials for patients with severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID), a rare and potentially fatal genetic disease in which the immune system can't fight off infections. This therapy involves transplanting gene-corrected stem cells from the patient's own bone marrow in order to fully restore the patient's defective immune system.
Facchino earned her bachelor's degree in nursing from Villanova University, followed by a master's degree in nursing from UCSF. She is a member of the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners.
