The most important medical advances tend to emerge when clinicians are attuned to all aspects of delivering care, from the most sophisticated science to the complex human concerns of their patients.
Marc and Lynne Benioff have donated $100 million to support construction of a new, 183-bed children's hospital at Mission Bay. The building — with a sustainable design that enhances patient safety and staff efficiency — should improve the health of thousands, perhaps millions of children.
The pioneering Neurointensive Care Nursery at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital incorporates a specially trained, multidisciplinary team of specialists who use advanced monitoring equipment and new protocols to provide early diagnoses, improved counseling of families and faster, more informed decisions about emerging treatment options.
Novel treatments — including biological therapies, new drug delivery strategies, and unique combination of radiation and chemotherapy — seek to improve outcomes and reduce long-term toxicities for children with brain tumors. Thanks to one such treatment, 6-year-old Rosalie Reibel started kindergarten this fall.
Team Treatment Provides a Care Continuum for Cleft Lip and Palate Children born with cleft lip or palate are vulnerable to many things that affect basic functions, such as breathing, eating, talking and hearing. Comprehensive team care that includes surgeons, dentists, a nurse practitioner, a speech pathologist, a social worker and genetic counselors results in the least number of operations and the best outcomes.
Since the devastating earthquake struck Haiti in January 2010, pediatric and neonatology clinicians from UCSF have made a number of volunteer trips to serve the medical needs of the Haitian people.

UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital has established a single phone number that now serves as the gateway for all inpatient services provided by UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital and the Center for Mothers and Newborns. The new toll-free number (877) UC–CHILD, was created in an effort to make it easier for physicians throughout the region to transport and admit patients to UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital.
