Orthopedic Clinic

UCSF's pediatric orthopedists are experts in the physical development of children and how a child's ongoing growth requires care that differs from that of an adult. Our team is comprised of doctors, nurses and physical therapists who work together to develop treatment plans that are tailored to each child's individual needs. Our goal is to improve the child's quality of life, decrease pain and enhance function.

We're experts in managing the special needs of children with problems such as hip dysplasia, Legg-Calve-Perthes disease, bow legs and knock knees, scoliosis, kyphosis or "hunch back" and spondylolisthesis, a condition in which one vertebra slips forward on the one below it. We treat rare disorders such as fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva.

Problems of the foot and ankle — such as clubfoot, flatfoot and in-toeing and out-toing — also are treated.

Other problems we treat include:

  • Growth problems that result in uneven legs and arms
  • Skeletal dysplasias or abnormal tissue growths, including achondroplasia, osteogenesis imperfecta and epiphysial dysplasis
  • Syndromes including Marfan syndrome, a hereditary condition affecting bones, muscles and connective tissues, and neurofibromastosis that cause tumors on peripheral nerves
  • Infections of bones and joints
  • Tumors such as bone cysts, osteochondromas or bone growths and other benign bone conditions
  • Orthopedic problems resulting from neurological diseases such as cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy and spina bifida
  • Trauma, including bone fractures and joint dislocations, and the effects on growing bones
  • Conditions of the hands and arms, including deformities, trigger thumb and brachial plexus palsy

We treat complex problems in collaboration with specialists in neurosurgery, rehabilitative medicine and anesthesiology. We also work closely with physical therapists, occupational therapists, hand therapists and child life specialists.

Parents are vital members of the team and we do our best to ensure that parents are fully informed about their children's condition and treatment.
