At the UCSF Nutrition Counseling Clinic, registered dietitians provide nutrition counseling to parents and their children from infancy through adolescence. Nutrition counseling includes an assessment of your child's growth, eating habits and nutritional adequacy.

Research and Clinical Trials

Last updated July 29, 2010

Nutrition counseling is not always covered as an insurance benefit.

If your child's doctor is a member of Hill Physicians or Brown and Toland Medical Group, the nutrition appointment will be preauthorized. For all other medical groups or insurance companies, it may be necessary to obtain preauthorization for nutrition counseling services. Please contact the company to determine if nutrition counseling services will be covered.

You may be required to self-pay for your child's nutrition appointment if your insurance does not cover nutrition counseling services.

Please call the Nutrition Counseling Clinic at (415) 353-2291 if you have specific questions about self-pay fees.

To refer a patient to the Nutrition Counseling Clinic, please follow the steps below.

Step 1 — Referral Information

Please fax the following information to (415) 353-2648:

  • Referral form. Please be sure to include ICD-9 codes for diagnoses you wish the dietitian to address.
  • Pertinent medical records, including growth chart. Include relevant lab results for patients outside of UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital.

Step 2 — Insurance Check

Nutrition counseling is often not covered as an insurance benefit. The patient's family member should be informed that he or she may be required to self-pay if their insurance does not authorize nutrition counseling.

If the patient has Brown & Toland coverage, please submit a request for authorization to Brown & Tolland. For other insurance plans, the patient's parent should be instructed to contact the insurance company to determine whether nutrition counseling is a covered benefit.

Step 3 — Scheduling

Once you have sent the referral to the Nutrition Counseling Clinic and the insurance coverage is determined, ask the patient's family member to call the Ambulatory Care Center at (415) 353-4174 to schedule a nutrition counseling appointment.
