The Neuro-Oncology Center at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital specializes in the treatment of brain and spinal cord tumors. Our goal is to cure whenever possible, but always to provide the best care for each child and family in a supportive environment. Our team — including pediatric cancer specialists, pediatric neurosurgeons, pediatric nurse practitioners, social workers, child life specialists and a school liaison specialist — coordinates the care of each child.
Patients have access to the most advanced therapies available, neuropsychological consultation and palliative care for life-threatening conditions, when needed. We work closely with local and national organizations, support groups and community resources for children and their families.
We care for more than 50 new patients each year, many who are enrolled in clinical trials that give patients access to experimental treatments such as new forms of radiation therapy or chemotherapy. UCSF is a member of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Pediatric Brain Tumor Consortium and participates in clinical trials of the latest therapies.
One of our research projects involves a pioneering, new drug delivery approach for pediatric brain tumors, called convection-enhanced delivery, in which an experimental, targeted anti-tumor agent is directly injected into the tumor to try to prevent cancer from recurring.
The Neuro-Oncology Center is part of the UCSF Pediatric Brain Center, which brings together doctors from all disciplines related to brain health in children. We are passionate about collaborating with each other, our patients and their families to provide the best possible care for each child.
Our experts are world-class pediatric specialists in neurology, neurosurgery, neurocritical care, neurogenetics, neuro-oncology, rehabilitation, neuroradiology, neuropsychology and psychiatry. By working as a team we are able to reach the right diagnosis and treatment quickly, getting our patients on the road to recovery and bringing peace of mind to parents.
