LIFE Clinic

The Long-term Infant-to-adult Follow-up and Evaluation Program, or LIFE Clinic, provides long-term follow-up care to infants cared for in UCSF's Intensive Care Nursery. Infants — who weighed less than 1,500 grams at birth, received extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) treatment, underwent fetal surgery or had other at-risk conditions — are followed for growth and development.

The clinic, started in 2002, now serves almost 200 children who received either prenatal or postnatal treatment for congenital anomalies, including congenital diaphragmatic hernia, esophageal atresia, congenital pulmonary airway malformation, sacrococcygeal teratoma, choledochal cysts, imperforate anus, Hirschsprung's disease and other conditions.

The program provides the following services.

  • Parent support after discharge
  • Early identification of developmental disabilities and referral for rehabilitative services
  • Liaison with public health services and local agencies involved in the child's care

Our core staff includes a neonatologist trained in developmental and behavioral pediatrics, psychologist, nurse, coordinator and physical therapy consultant. We see patients in our San Francisco office as well as in satellite clinics in Clear Lake, Eureka, Salinas, Santa Rosa, Ukiah and Willits, with clinics at other sites as needed.
