The UCSF Imaging Center at China Basin offers the latest Positron Emission Tomography (PET Scan) and Computed Tomography (CT or CAT Scan) technology. PET and CT scans are standard imaging tools that allow doctors to pinpoint the location of cancer within the body.
The PET scan detects the metabolic signal of actively growing cancer cells and the CT scan provides a detailed picture of the internal anatomy that reveals the location, size and shape of cancerous growths. When the results of PET and CT scans are "fused" together, the combined image provides complete information on cancer location and metabolism.
In the six hours before your visit, you should not consume anything other than water. You may take your medications as usual before your scan if they can be tolerated on an empty stomach.
Metal can interfere with the quality of the scan, so wear comfortable clothing without any zippers, snaps, or other metal items to your appointment. Bring a list of medications you are regularly taking.
The visit will take about two hours. First, you will receive an injection of a radioactive tracer, which will take about an hour to distribute throughout your body. You will then be asked to lie down on the scanner bed. The scan takes about 30 to 45 minutes. Once the PET scan is complete, you can leave the Imaging Center. You should drink plenty of fluids following your scan to help flush the tracer out of your body.
A radiologist will interpret your PET-CT scan and send the results to your referring doctor within one to two days. You should contact your doctor to discuss the results.
You'll need a referral from your child's pediatrician or specialist to make an appointment. Once you have the referral, please call the number below.
